When I Was a Girl by Dawn Torrens

Dawn Torrens

I was brought up in the state care system for most of my childhood. They had poorly stacked libraries full of donated books. I spent so much of my time in these libraries reading anything I could get my hands on. And from there my love of reading and writing was born. This was the perfect escape for me as I could transport myself any where in the world by just opening a book! The last four years of my time in care was spent in the notorious, (North Wales Children’s homes) called Bryn Alyn and then Cotsbrook Hall.

I wanted to show the world that you don’t have to become a statistic and fall by the wayside like everyone expects. You can grow up to be a functioning and well adjusted adult regardless of the surroundings and life you are forced to endure. My determination and will power to make something of myself has paid off! However, this did not come easy to me. I had to work extremely hard and push myself far harder than most to make my dreams a reality.

Now a mother myself to a four year old princess, I live by the motto, “The child first and foremost.” She inspires all that I am and all that I do…

My love for writing was born from incredible circumstances…

I have been writing since the age of twelve years old. I kept a journal and wrote poems, then graduated to short stories. I just loved to write. I never did anything with them, and I never told anyone about them at that point in my life. It was a love I had developed and also a means to escape my existence at that time. Writing for me is a way of transporting yourself into a completely different world for a short while. Developing characters and watching them come to life!

To say I was passionate about writing would most definitely be an understatement! I could not imagine a life without writing. I keep all my ideas for future books in a journal, all ideas written in hand! I am never without my journal, as you never know when or what will inspire an idea whilst out on the road.

Once I have a story in my head, it has to come out right there and then, I become all consumed and spend every available minute penning that story until it’s finished… Thankfully I have an understanding family who fully support me every step of the way.

Public reaction to Amelia’s Story

Amelia’s Story has to be my most precious book and will always remain so. This book was written from deep inside of me. I bared my soul to the world hoping I would make a difference. Change people’s perceptions on these huge gargantuan institutions that were otherwise known as children’s homes. But most of all to inspire all those people out there, young and old, who have given up hope on their dreams and themselves — that no matter where you come from or what walk of life, you can achieve your dream with enough will power and determination. Believe me, I know what I’m talking about!

Amelia’s Story has received an incredible heart-warming response from people all over the world. I have received messages from many young adults on my fan100_0358 page advising me how my story has changed their life or inspired hope in them once more. This to me means more than all the sales and reviews put together. knowing I have made such a difference to someone I have never met halfway around the world. One of my American reviews stated that my story had inspired a career change for them.  The response in truth has been so over-whelming and completely unexpected. I could never have foreseen the impact my true story would have on so many. You only have to read many of the beautiful messages left by my readers on my author page to see the impact it’s already had and continues to make on others. I could not wish for more really as my books are having the desired affect which is what I’d always intended for it.
