A Thursday teaser from the latest crime romance

By Sydney Landon

Warning: explicit language.

“Good day at the office, honey?” I ask sarcastically as I watch the woman a few feet away unloading what looks like an arsenal. Very few people would guess that the voluptuous blonde staring back at me is in fact the daughter of Ray Gavino, head of the Gavino family. Of course, that’s a rather old-school description because not everyone in the mafia is related by blood. Unlike what the movies would have you believe, most of the successful organizations are more corporate now than gangster. Steal from us and we’re more likely to bankrupt your ass than to pop a cap in it. Unless you really fuck up. Then we’ll do both.

But neither Minka nor I are stupid. We grew up in the life and know well how dangerous it can be. There are strict rules and consequences. Fuck, we’re breaking a big one just by being together.

I should have pointed out at the beginning that I’m Nicoli Moretti, top lieutenant and best friend to the head of the Moretti Family—Marco Moretti. The fact that Marco himself fell in love with, and eventually married, Nina Gavino, stepdaughter to the late, and kinda nuts, Franklin Gavino, surprisingly helped ease the nonfraternization rule.

For you newcomers, I should have pointed out at the beginning that I’m Nicoli Moretti, top lieutenant and best friend to the head of the Moretti Family—Marco Moretti. The fact that Marco himself fell in love with, and eventually married, Nina Gavino, stepdaughter to the late, and kinda fucking nuts, Franklin Gavino, surprisingly helped ease the nonfraternization rule. Although, there are many on both sides who do not like it. We both have trust issues where the other families are concerned. Neither of us takes offense though, as it’s simply the way of things. A smart person is wary of everyone and everything. But when you’re born mafia, it’s a part of your DNA. At a young age, you know the names of your rivals, and you draw a fucking line in the sand between you and them with your crayon.

Sure, business interests cross over at times, but it’s rare we place complete faith in outsiders. Which means a relationship between two such high-ranking rivals is tricky, to say the least. Even Marco, who certainly understands that you can’t always choose who you fall in love with, isn’t thrilled that Minka and I are still together. I think he was hoping we would fuck it out of our system quickly. Yet six months after the big mess of Marco’s mother taking out his father and attempting to kill Nina, we’re still fucking. Hell, we’re pretty much living together. And I have no clue what it means or where it’s going. In truth, I spend far too much time trying to dissect it. I feel like the pussy I’ve accused Marco of being in regard to Nina. Maybe it’s our lot in life to be the chicks in our relationships when they involve Gavino women. I’ll kill any motherfucker who verbalizes that shit.

My thoughts are brought abruptly back to the present when Minka sticks a hand down her black leather pants and pulls out a switchblade. Fuck, I love her—er, lust her. Those “L” words are tricky bastards. I lean back against the sofa and eye her lazily. “See something you like, Nicole?” she asks with the smirk I’ve become so accustomed to. And as insulting as it is, I’ve also accepted her deliberate mispronunciation of my name. Hell, I’ve long since stopped correcting her. Especially since I know she gets off on chapping my ass. And I get off on everything about her.

Nicoli: Pierced, Lucian & Lia, Book 9

What do you do when those closest to you are not who they appear to be? For a man as loyal as Nicoli Moretti it’s the ultimate betrayal. As the top lieutenant and best friend to the head of the Moretti family, he thought he knew everything about the man he considered a brother—but he was so very wrong. Still reeling from that blow, he discovers that not only did the woman he loves know before him, but she also has secrets of her own—ones that could well get her killed.

His thirst for revenge is almost overwhelming—yet so is his love for Minka Gavino. A relationship with someone from another mafia family would be complicated on a good day, but is it even worth fighting for now? Once the trust is gone, can it ever be rebuilt? Or, will he walk away from the only life he’s ever known and the only woman he’s ever loved?

The romance Thursday teaser from the new novel

By Ally James

It wasn’t as if Gabe believed that Sara, this mythical creature who was interested in corresponding with him, had just happened upon his life to be his forever love. That would be foolish thinking, and if there was one thing Gabriel was not, it was foolish. Nor illogical. Contact with Sara would be brief and entertaining. He doubted her intention of writing had been anything other than an obligatory greeting to the overseas soldier she had been assigned. Should I nip this in the bud now? Although what’s the harm in writing back and forth for a bit? He could delete her latest e-mail and let it go. But—he just couldn’t do it.

Military mail was a pain in the ass at times. What if he changed his mind and it was not in the recycle bin? Just that thought alone made him feel a little queasy. So maybe he wouldn’t get rid of her latest e-mail yet. No harm in letting it sit there. The trick was not replying.

Gabe grabbed a nearby folder with some information for the morning meeting and hurried from his office. He would stay busy until the urge had passed.

Two hours later, Gabe felt like a junky deprived of his fix. His knees were bouncing up and down and he was chewing gum as if his life depended on it. It was mean not to send a quick message. A gentleman doesn’t ignore a lady. He knew that last one was a reach, but still, he’d take any justification at this point. It was almost alarming how much he craved hearing from this Sara again. And he knew for that to happen, he had to do his part. Before he could wage another inner battle, he opened her e-mail and hit the Reply button.

Sara:

Yes, I am single and my dog’s name is Trouble. After being surrounded by our uniforms for many years, I don’t think I share your views on them suiting everyone equally well. I would agree that touching your nose with your tongue isn’t necessarily a feature. And I’ve never given any thought as to what mine would be.

Thanks,

Gabe

Gabe shook his head in defeat. He hadn’t thought it could get much worse than his first written disaster, but this one was a strong contender. Why can’t I just talk to her like a friend? If he was this uptight with all women, that might explain why they weren’t exactly beating his door down. Again, he wondered why it suddenly mattered so much to him.

As intrigued as he was with his new pen pal, a part of him resented her as well. He had more than enough shit to keep him awake at night. Now thanks to her, he was actually giving thought to being liked? When had he ever given a damn about anyone’s approval? He’d moved up in the ranks of the military through hard work, dedication, and precision, not kissing ass. Same thing applied to other areas of his life. He was there if needed and stayed out of things that weren’t any of his concern. You’re the social butterfly of Anchorage, Alaska. Winning them over everywhere you go with that personality.

Before he wasted more of his day on self-analysis, Gabe hit the Send button and logged off his computer. He’d never been happier to know he was needed at the airfield. At least that would keep his mind off her for a while. Get out of my head lady, he inwardly groused as he crossed the runway. As if afraid he’d jinxed himself, his next thought was, Please write back.

A romantic Thursday teaser from the brand new military romance

By Ally James

Talk about a family reunion from hell, Sara Ryan thought as she smiled politely through yet another introduction. Her aunt Lydia had relentlessly marched her around the room like a drill sergeant for the last hour. Her brother, Chris, had been smart enough to make up an excuse that got him out of coming, but true to form, Sara let her mother guilt her into it. The bathroom door was only inches away, and she was so close to making a break for it, when her aunt’s voice rang out loud enough for the people in the next town to hear. “And this is my niece Sara, Joan’s daughter. You know, the spinster. She lives with her brother.” Horrified. That’s the only way to put it. Or perhaps “mortified” was a better word. The entire family appeared to be staring at her with equal parts pity and disapproval. While Sara was frantically trying to compose herself, her aunt patted her on the back before adding, “She spends a lot of time with her mom, since, you know, she’s never had a boyfriend. I’ve told her time and again that she needs to get her nose out of those trashy books she’s always reading. Men like that don’t exist.” Sara wanted to object. There had been some boyfriends. It had been a while, but there had definitely been a couple. Back before the time of electricity and vehicles. Heck, she’d had sex before. But how exactly could she go about denying something so personal without making herself sound worse? Could this could get any worse?

She opened her mouth, intent on clarifying some of the misinformation, but her aunt Ivy suddenly appeared at her other side. Shit, what now? Her mother’s oldest sister had always been the more outspoken of the three of them, which was normally amusing—but Sara was already at her limit and couldn’t take much more. Ivy gave her an exaggerated wink, which resembled someone having a seizure, before saying, “I sure love that Christian fella. Now there’s someone who seems like he’s got it all figured out. Anna is one lucky gal. He’s rich, hot, and knows how to take care of his business.” All eyes turned to stare across the room when Ivy pointed to her husband, who appeared to be sound asleep sitting up. “Even Fred likes listening to those audio books.” Oh, dear God, she can’t possibly be talking about Fifty Shades of Grey. Sweet Aunt Ivy? Uncle Fred? From the snickers around the room, Sara could only deduce that Ivy wasn’t the only one who’d been doing a little reading on the wild side. Or was it doing a little wild reading on the side? And while the things being whispered among her relatives might result in years of therapy in the future, it had shifted the attention away from her. “That’s disturbing,” an amused voice murmured behind her. Sara whirled around to find her cousin Chloe standing there with a grimace on her face. “Sorry about Mom. She means well for the most part.”

Thursday teaser: Lee

Contemporary romance

Lee: Lucian & Lia book 6 romantic erotica

By Sydney Landon

“So how many exactly have there been since I left?  Assistants, I mean,” I add quickly.  I certainly have no desire to hear about the number of women warming his bed.  He probably can’t count that high.

“A few,” he says vaguely.  “No one has any type of work ethic anymore.  And the few who managed to show up on time couldn’t take direction if you stapled a detailed list to their damn forehead.  Do you know that I asked one of them for the Camden file, and she came into my office with a purse the size of the Grand Canyon and dumped it out on my floor?  When she started crawling around down there going through the debris, I asked her what she was doing and she said that she didn’t know what name brand her nail file was, but she figured it would do the job.”

I can’t help it.  I laugh until tears are rolling down my face.  I can so easily imagine Lee’s expression when that happened.  “That’s hilarious,” I manage to croak out as he shakes his head at me.  When I get myself under control, I ask, “So I take it that she didn’t make it long after that?”

“Hell no,” he grunts.  “As soon as she put all that shit back into her bag, I had HR inform her that her services were no longer needed.  I was half afraid that she’d find that damn nail file and stab me with it, but according to Pete, who was close by, she actually hummed on her way out.”

“She was probably thrilled to get away from you,” I joke.  Lee wasn’t an easy man to work for, especially if you couldn’t read his mind.  Luckily, we connected from the beginning, and it had never really been a problem for me.

“I just want people to do what I pay them for,” he states, making no apologies.  And why should he?  Yes, he can be a bit abrupt, but he works just as hard, if not harder, than anyone there.  Plus, the pay scale at Falco is far better than most businesses in North Carolina.

“I agree with you,” I say softly.  Then as quickly as the moment of familiarity that only comes from working together is there, it’s gone, and I’m on edge once again.  I want to know why he’s here, yet I’m terrified to ask.  But this strange impasse that we’re at must end, and he doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to do it.  Therefore, it’s up to me.  So, squaring my shoulders, I ask point-blank, “Why are you really here, Lee?  You and I both know this is completely out of character for you.”

He smirks for a moment, then inclines his head to acknowledge the truth of my words.  “I’d like you to come back to work.  Seeing as you’re currently unemployed, it shouldn’t be a problem.  You can start in the morning.  Kara will be more than happy to turn everything back over to you.”

I gape at him in shock.  “I—er… what?” I manage to get out.  He’s completely unruffled, while my hands twist in my lap as I try to decide if he’s joking or not.  Since when have you known him to joke?  It’s time to make that run for the door.

He gets to his feet abruptly as if everything has been decided.  “I’ll see you at the usual time tomorrow.”  When I open my mouth to protest, he adds softly, “Don’t even think about not showing up.  Because if you aren’t there, the first place I’ll look is Hunter Wrenn’s home, and I know you don’t want that.”  My vision blurs as I stare at his retreating back.  For the second time that day, the front door is slammed as another angry person leaves.  “Oh, my God,” I whisper as I collapse in my chair.  He knows.  Dear God, he knows!  The voice in my head is in full panic mode, but outwardly, I’ve fallen into some kind of weird trance-like state.

Romance teaser: Marco

Share

We wrap up Romance Month 2019 with a tense sample from the brand new romantic comedy

By Sydney Landon

Have I been harboring some type of secret crush on Marco?  Who hasn’t?  Everything about him screams carnal and erotic.  Everything.  His eyes.  His smile.  His arrogance.  But the crush stops now.

Minka is right; there is no world where he will ever be my Prince Charming.  I am the girl who writes about the things I’ve always longed to find, but unless heartache is one of my future goals, I need to keep my guard up and my panties in place.  Whether I want to admit it, he’s dangerous to my health, and it has nothing to do with his job and everything to do with my reaction to him.

He’s gotten to me.  Dammit, how did I let this happen?  There’s no disputing the fact that he’s hot.  That’s the understatement of the century.  But even more than that, he’s smart, funny, and so damned loyal to his family.

Even though there’s nothing about his way of life that I approve of, the way they all have each other’s backs is admirable.

He has mine as well, and I’m nothing to him.  I am neither Moretti nor Gavino.  I’m an outsider.

I’ve joked about honor among thieves, but in his case, there is truth there.  I sense the strict code within him.

Maybe it’s my hormones talking, but I sense so much more to him than what he shows the world.  Says every woman who has ever thought she could change a man. He’s mafia.  I can’t be my mother.  I cannot fall for a man who is married to the family.

As I attempt to hide my panic from Minka, one thought keeps swirling in my head: God help me if he ever finds out I have feelings for him.

About Marco

My name is Marco Moretti and I’m the son of the Moretti Crime Family boss. He’s also my father and a bit of an asshole, but we all have problems, don’t we?

I’ve always loved women of all shapes and sizes and they’ve loved me in return. Sometimes a bit too much, but a stalker or two keeps things interesting. My position within “the family” has been the most important thing to me, until fate—and food poisoning—brought Nina Gavino into my life.

I’ve finally found the woman that I can’t live without, and she wants nothing to do with me. My usual charm has gotten me nowhere. And if she ever finds out that I killed her stepfather and stepbrother, I’m afraid nothing short of a miracle, will make the beautiful spitfire, give me a chance to prove that there is more to me than the job she holds so much contempt for.

Lucian & Lia Book 6: A spicy teaser from the erotic romance story

Lee: Lucian & Lia book 6 romantic eroticaBy Sydney Landon

Then it happened… something beyond comprehension.  His shoulders shook, and for just a moment, I feared I’d made the great Lee Jacks cry with my hurtful comments.  But no—the bastard was actually laughing.  Without thinking, I grabbed the first thing within reach and threw one of his expensive pens at his head.  As if anticipating the move, he plucked it effortlessly out of the air.  “You’re such an asshole,” I hissed, no longer caring that I was committing career suicide.  That was what I wanted.  I thought.  A way out of the mess I’d gotten into.

He raised a brow, twirling the pen in his fingers.  “I always knew you had claws under that calm exterior,” he murmured.

“And I was certain you were a dickhead beneath the whole iceman persona.  Looks as if we were both right, huh, boss?” I smirked.  At that point, I didn’t even know the woman spouting insults at the man she loved anymore.  I’d never been so disrespectful to anyone before in my life, and it was both scary and strangely exhilarating.  I’d opened the gates, and it was hard to stop the flow of catty comments, so I didn’t even try.  I perched on the corner of his desk and began shifting items around on the immaculate surface.  I knew well how much he hated disorder, and I grinned inwardly as his eye twitched slightly at the mess I made.  I was tempted to knock his half-empty cup of coffee over, but I wasn’t quite that brave.  He would’ve probably strangled me for that offense.  “This gangster vibe you’re rocking might turn all the other women on, but I’ve always felt it was a little absurd.  I mean, The Sopranos have already been done to death.  Couldn’t you have come up with something more original?”

He was out of his chair so fast I barely tracked the movement.  I was pulled from his desk and slammed into the hard wall of his chest.  “You have no idea who you’re playing games with, little girl,” he gritted out.  “I could show you a monster so fucking ugly that you’d never be able to close your eyes in the dark again.  Is that what you want?  For me to poison every part of your life until I’ve destroyed you?  Because you’re naïve if you don’t think it would come to that.  You don’t have a goddamned clue what I’ve done without blinking a fucking eye or what I’m capable of doing.”  I expected him to be rough, but when he took my face in his hands, he was gentle as if I was made of glass.  “You’ve been closer to me than anyone other than Pete.  But unlike him, I’ve sheltered you from the real me.  And maybe that was a mistake.”  He ran a finger across my lips, and they parted almost of their own violation.  “You’re a beautiful woman, and I’ve always been attracted to you.  I have no idea where this absurd and inaccurate opinion that you have of yourself came from, but it’s bullshit.  You have no clue how tempted I’ve been to throw caution to the wind and give us both what we want.”

Drowning in the desire in his eyes, I whispered huskily, “Then do it.  Stop trying to protect me.  I’m not who you think I am.”  That last part was as close to a confession as I’d ever been, but he didn’t know that.  He thought I was saying I was some sort of closet bad girl who was up for whatever he unleashed.  Maybe he was right about that, but sadly it didn’t mean that, and I wasn’t brave enough to go any further with my revelations.  I couldn’t live in a world where he hated me. I wasn’t that strong.

He lowered his mouth to mine and kissed me angrily.  He was tempted.  I felt it.
